    The third system is the computer — the brain's storage and automation centre. It records experiences, beliefs, habits, and emotional responses, then uses this information to drive automatic behaviours.

    The key principle is repetition. Whatever is practised most becomes strongest.

    Over time, behaviours become automatic, responses become predictable, and habits require less conscious effort. While this creates efficiency, it also means that unhelpful patterns can become deeply embedded and continue to influence how we think, feel, and behave under pressure.

    The challenge is that, in many situations, the initial response has already been triggered before conscious thought has fully engaged.

    In moments of pressure, we don't rise to our intentions — we default to our strongest habits.

    If those habits have been shaped by stress, distraction, or emotional reactivity, performance is likely to suffer. Importantly, however, the brain does not distinguish between pathways that are helpful and those that are unhelpful. It simply strengthens whatever is used most often.

    This has significant implications for everyday life. If someone repeatedly responds to pressure with stress, that response becomes more automatic. If attention is constantly fragmented, distraction becomes the brain's default setting. If overthinking is repeatedly practised, the pathway for overthinking becomes stronger and easier to access.

    Over time, these responses can begin to feel natural, even when they are not serving us well.

    The encouraging news is that the same principle works in the opposite direction. Just as unhelpful pathways can be strengthened through repetition, so too can more productive patterns such as focus, emotional regulation, resilience, and mindfulness. The brain is always adapting. The question is whether the pathways being reinforced are helping us perform and feel better, or simply repeating habits that no longer serve us.

    Brain Plasticity: The Opportunity for Change

    Step 1: Find a Comfortable Position Sit comfortably in a chair or on the floor with your spine relaxed but upright.

    Step 2: Inhale Gently Through the Nose Take a slow, comfortable breath in through your nose without forcing it.

    Step 3: Exhale With a Soft Hum As you breathe out, produce a gentle humming sound such as "Om" or "Voom".

    Step 4: Focus on the Vibration Direct your attention towards the vibration created by the hum. You may feel this in your lips, face, throat, chest, or throughout the body.

    Step 5: Continue for Two to Five Minutes Repeat the cycle of breathing and humming, maintaining a slow, comfortable rhythm throughout.

Even short periods of practice, lasting just 60 to 90 seconds, can create a noticeable shift in focus and emotional state.

    A Common Misconception About Meditation

    They sit down with the intention of focusing, only to discover that their mind feels busier than ever.
