None of these things are inherently bad. Technology has transformed how we communicate. Entertainment is available whenever we want it. Food has become more convenient, and many modern innovations have undoubtedly improved our quality of life.

However, these same advances have also created an environment unlike anything the human brain has encountered throughout most of its history.

For hundreds of thousands of years, our ancestors lived in a world of scarcity where survival was unpredictable. Today, many of us experience the opposite problem. Rather than searching for rewarding experiences, rewarding experiences are constantly searching for us. Notifications appear on our phones throughout the day. Advertisements are carefully personalised to capture our attention. Food can be delivered to our front door within minutes. Entire industries invest billions each year designing products that encourage us to return again and again.

Understanding addiction, therefore, is no longer just about understanding drugs or alcohol. It is about understanding how the human brain responds to reward in a modern world that offers almost unlimited opportunities for stimulation.

This matters because addiction is still widely misunderstood. It is often explained as a lack of willpower, poor decision-making or weak character. People are told they simply need to "try harder" or "show more self-control". While personal responsibility undoubtedly plays an important role in changing behaviour, these explanations overlook something fundamental. They ignore the remarkable way in which the human brain has evolved to learn from rewarding experiences and repeat behaviours that increase the chances of survival.

Our brains are not broken because they seek pleasure. In fact, they are doing exactly what evolution designed them to do.

The same biological systems that motivate us to find food, build relationships, explore our environment and learn from experience are the very systems that can, under certain circumstances, make some behaviours increasingly difficult to regulate. More often, the brain has learnt to associate a particular behaviour with relief, reward or emotional escape, making it increasingly difficult to resist.

Another misconception is that addiction only affects certain types of people. In reality, every human being possesses the same reward system. We all experience dopamine, we all develop habits and we all learn from rewarding experiences. What differs is our genetics, life experiences, mental health, environment and the frequency and intensity of our exposure to rewarding behaviours. Addiction is not a character flaw reserved for a small group of people; it is a human vulnerability that exists to varying degrees within us all.

While substance addictions remain incredibly important, modern research recognises that behavioural addictions can also become compulsive. Growing evidence continues to explore the addictive potential of activities; these behaviours may not involve putting a chemical into the body, but they still repeatedly stimulate the brain's reward system in remarkably similar ways.

Finally, there is the belief that once someone develops an addiction, recovery is unlikely. This is simply not supported by what we now know about the brain. One of the most encouraging discoveries in neuroscience is that the brain remains adaptable throughout life. Through a process known as neuroplasticity, new habits, healthier routines and different patterns of behaviour can gradually become established. Recovery is rarely quick or straightforward, but it is absolutely possible.

Modern addictions: a changing world

As outlined the modern world has introduced a whole new category of highly rewarding behaviours that compete for our attention every single day.

Many of which are woven seamlessly into everyday life: constant smartphone notifications, unlimited streaming entertainment, immediate availability of online shopping and instant access to highly processed food, all whenever we choose.

The challenge is that many of these products have been carefully designed to encourage repeated engagement. Social media platforms use notifications, likes and infinite scrolling to keep us online. Streaming services use auto renewal. Online retailers create urgency through limited-time offers and personalised recommendations. Food manufacturers carefully engineer products to maximise flavour and encourage repeat purchases, to name but a few.

Increasingly, researchers refer to this as the attention economy, a world where companies compete not only for our money, but for our focus, our time and our behaviour. Every additional minute spent scrolling, watching, shopping or playing has value, creating powerful incentives to make products as engaging as possible.

Our brains evolved in environments where rewarding experiences were relatively scarce. Today, we are surrounded by almost unlimited opportunities for stimulation. This then highlights an important reality, the reward system that once helped our ancestors survive is now operating in a world that constantly invites us to seek just one more scroll, one more episode, one more purchase or one more drink.

Understanding this changing environment is essential because it shifts the conversation towards awareness. The question is no longer simply, "Why do some people struggle with self-control?" Instead, we begin asking, "How does a brain that evolved for survival respond to a world filled with almost limitless reward?"

Why humans evolved this way

Shelter required constant effort to build and maintain, while danger could appear at any moment in the form of predators, harsh weather or competing tribes.

The human brain evolved under these conditions over hundreds of thousands of years. Every adaptation that increased the chances of survival was more likely to be passed on to future generations. As a result, our brains became remarkably efficient at solving one fundamental problem: keeping us alive.

Importantly, evolution doesn't strive for happiness or fulfilment. Its primary objective is survival and reproduction. If a particular behaviour improved the chances of staying alive long enough to pass on our genes, the brain gradually became better at encouraging that behaviour.

This is why the brain developed such sophisticated systems for learning, remembering and pursuing rewarding experiences. These weren't accidental features of human biology. They were essential survival tools.

Ironically, the same systems that once protected us are the very systems that can leave us vulnerable in today's world.

Survival: reward was essential

Our ancestors didn't need help resisting temptation.

They needed help finding enough reward to survive.

Imagine walking for hours without food before eventually discovering a tree full of ripe fruit. A brain that remembered the location and encouraged you to return would have a significant survival advantage over one that simply forgot about it. The same principle applied to finding fresh water, discovering safe shelter or building strong social relationships. Every successful experience taught the brain something valuable about surviving in an unpredictable world.

This is why rewarding experiences became so important.

When something increased the likelihood of survival, the brain reinforced that behaviour. It encouraged us to repeat actions that led to positive outcomes and avoid those associated with danger or discomfort. Over time, these learning systems became deeply embedded within human biology.

Seeking reward, therefore, is not a design flaw.

It is one of the reasons our species survived and thrived.

Even today, we continue to rely on these same systems. They motivate us to eat when we're hungry, drink when we're thirsty, seek companionship, care for our families and learn new skills. Without them, human life would be very different.

The challenge is that these ancient systems are now operating in an environment they were never designed to navigate.

Reward: the brain learns what is worth repeating

Every rewarding experience then teaches the brain an important lesson.

Whenever something produces a positive outcome, the brain begins asking a simple question:

"Was that worth doing again?"

Energy conservation: the path of least resistance

We have already established that modern life has dramatically increased the number of low-effort, high-reward choices available to us. Answers to almost any question are available within seconds.

Our brains haven't suddenly become weaker.

They are responding exactly as evolution designed them to respond.

The problem is that our environment has changed at an extraordinary pace, while our biology has changed very little. We are using a brain that evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to navigate a world that has transformed dramatically within just a few generations.

This simple mismatch lies at the heart of understanding modern addiction. The reward systems that once helped us survive in a world of scarcity are now surrounded by almost limitless opportunities for stimulation. Before we can understand why some behaviours become so difficult to regulate, we must first recognise that our brains are doing what they have always done: seeking reward, learning from experience and conserving energy wherever possible.

Why modern life changed everything

Our brains have changed very little over the past 200,000 years.

Our environment, however, has changed beyond recognition.

For almost all of human history, rewarding experiences were difficult to find. Every rewarding experience required time, effort and patience.

Today, almost every reward is available within seconds, and on an almost daily basis we are presented with more rewarding opportunities than our ancestors would have experienced in months.

This isn't because modern life is inherently unhealthy. It is because our biology evolved for a completely different world.

The challenge is no longer finding reward.

The challenge is knowing when to stop.

This mismatch between our ancient biology and our modern environment then sits at the heart of many of today's compulsive behaviours. We have established our brains are still operating with reward systems designed for survival in a world of scarcity, yet they now find themselves surrounded by an almost endless supply of stimulation.

Digital media: the battle for our attention

Few inventions have transformed human behaviour as dramatically as the smartphone.

In little more than a decade, it has become our newspaper, television, shopping centre, camera, diary, sat nav, music player, games console and social life; all contained within a device that fits into our pocket.

Technology itself is not the problem. Smartphones have connected families across continents, made knowledge instantly accessible and created opportunities that previous generations could never have imagined.

The challenge lies in how many digital platforms are designed.

Most social media platforms, streaming services and online games are built around one simple objective: encouraging us to stay engaged for as long as possible. Every extra minute we spend scrolling, watching or clicking creates value for the companies behind these products.

Features such as infinite scrolling, personalised recommendations, autoplay, notifications, likes, streaks and variable rewards are not accidental. They are carefully designed using behavioural science to encourage repeated engagement. Rather than asking us to make conscious decisions, these platforms reduce friction, making it effortless to continue.

Our brains, which evolved to notice anything that might represent a rewarding opportunity, respond exactly as we would expect. Every notification, message or unexpected piece of content has the potential to activate the brain's reward system and encourage us to check "just one more time."

Most of us have experienced this.

We unlock our phone to check the weather and twenty minutes later realise we've been scrolling through social media without remembering how we got there.

That isn't simply a failure of discipline.

It is the result of ancient reward systems interacting with technology that has become exceptionally good at capturing human attention.

Food: reward without scarcity

For our ancestors, finding high-calorie food could mean the difference between life and death.

Sweet foods signalled valuable energy. Fat provided long-lasting fuel. Salt was essential for maintaining normal bodily function. Whenever these nutrients became available, eating them was a highly successful survival strategy.

Our brains still carry those same preferences today.

The difference is that these foods are no longer rare.

Modern food manufacturers have become remarkably skilled at combining sugar, salt and fat in ways that maximise flavour and encourage repeat consumption. Scientists sometimes refer to these combinations as creating foods with exceptional "reward value", because they strongly activate the brain's learning and motivation systems.

Walk into any supermarket and you'll find thousands of products engineered to be convenient, affordable and incredibly enjoyable to eat. Portion sizes have increased, highly processed foods are available almost everywhere and food delivery services mean we no longer need to leave the house to satisfy a craving.

Again, none of this suggests that processed food is inherently bad or that enjoying chocolate, pizza or a takeaway is unhealthy in itself.

The challenge is frequency.

When highly rewarding foods become available every hour of every day, the brain receives far more opportunities to seek reward than it ever evolved to handle. The system that once protected us from starvation can now encourage overconsumption in an environment where calories are abundant.

Alcohol: a socially accepted reward

Alcohol occupies a unique place within modern society.

Unlike many other addictive substances, it is deeply embedded within our culture. It accompanies celebrations, sporting events, family gatherings, business meetings and holidays. For many people, drinking is viewed as a normal part of social life.

This widespread acceptance can sometimes make it difficult to recognise when a relationship with alcohol is becoming unhealthy.

Alcohol also interacts with the brain's reward system in ways that can reinforce repeated use. In the short term it may reduce anxiety, lower inhibitions or provide temporary feelings of relaxation. These experiences can teach the brain that alcohol offers relief from stress, boredom or emotional discomfort.

The difficulty is that while alcohol may provide temporary relief, the brain is continually adapting to repeated exposure. Over time, the same amount may produce less of the desired effect, encouraging some people to drink more frequently or in larger quantities. What may have begun as occasional enjoyment can gradually become a learned response to everyday life.

This is one of the reasons alcohol deserves particular attention when discussing modern addiction. It is legal, widely available, heavily marketed and socially accepted, yet it still interacts with the same ancient reward systems that evolved to help our ancestors survive.

Living in a world of constant reward

Digital media, highly processed food and alcohol are only three examples of a much broader pattern.

Online shopping, gaming, pornography, gambling, nicotine, caffeine and streaming services all share something in common. They provide rewarding experiences that are immediate, convenient and available with very little effort.

For the first time in human history, we are surrounded by an almost unlimited supply of highly rewarding opportunities.

Our brains did not evolve for this level of abundance.

They evolved for a world where rewards were earned through patience, effort and persistence.

Understanding this mismatch is one of the most important steps in understanding addiction. It reminds us that many of the struggles people experience today are not simply about willpower. They are the natural consequence of ancient biological systems attempting to navigate an environment that has changed faster than evolution could ever keep pace with.

Before we can understand why certain behaviours become difficult to resist, we need to understand the remarkable chemical messenger that helps drive almost every one of them.

That chemical is dopamine.

Dopamine explained

If there is one chemical that has become synonymous with addiction, it is dopamine.

It is often referred to as the brain's 'pleasure chemical', but this description is misleading. While dopamine certainly plays a role in pleasurable experiences, modern neuroscience has shown that its primary function is something quite different.

Dopamine is better understood as the brain's motivation and learning chemical.

Rather than creating pleasure itself, dopamine helps us identify what is important, motivates us to pursue it and teaches the brain whether that behaviour is worth repeating. It is one of the brain's most powerful learning tools, continually helping us answer the question:

"Is this something I should do again?"

Without dopamine, we would struggle to find the motivation to eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, learn new skills or pursue meaningful goals. It is fundamental to human survival.

Understanding this changes the way we think about addiction.

The problem is not that dopamine is 'bad'. The problem is that modern environments have become exceptionally good at stimulating a system that evolved for something completely different.

Wanting versus liking

One of the most important discoveries in addiction research is that wanting and liking are not the same thing.

Most people assume that we continue repeating behaviours because we enjoy them. While this is often true initially, repeated exposure can gradually separate these two experiences.

  • Liking describes the pleasure we experience when we receive a reward.

  • Wanting describes the motivation to pursue that reward again.

Dopamine is far more closely linked to wanting than it is to liking.

Imagine someone who opens social media for a few minutes during a lunch break. The experience may be enjoyable, so they repeat it the next day. Over weeks and months, the behaviour becomes increasingly automatic. Eventually they may find themselves checking their phone dozens of times a day without gaining much enjoyment from it at all.

The pleasure has diminished.

The urge remains.

The same pattern can occur with gambling, alcohol, nicotine, online shopping, gaming and many other behaviours. People often describe feeling compelled to engage in an activity even though it no longer provides the satisfaction it once did.

This is one of the defining characteristics of addiction.

The brain can continue driving the pursuit of a reward even as the reward itself becomes less enjoyable.

As addiction specialist Dr Anna Lembke summarises it:

"We begin wanting more while liking it less."

The signal (cue): when the brain starts anticipating reward

Another common misconception is that dopamine is only released when we receive a reward.

In reality, the brain often releases dopamine before the reward arrives.

This anticipation is triggered by what neuroscientists call a signal or cue.

A signal (cue) is anything the brain has learnt to associate with a rewarding experience. It might be hearing your phone vibrate, walking past your favourite coffee shop, seeing a drinks menu in a restaurant or sitting down on the sofa where you usually watch television.

Over time, these seemingly ordinary moments become powerful signals.

The brain begins anticipating the reward before it actually happens.

This explains why cravings can appear so suddenly. They often seem to come out of nowhere, yet they are usually triggered by signals we barely notice. Our environment is full of reminders linked to previous rewarding experiences, and the brain responds automatically.

Importantly, these cues are not evidence of weakness.

They are evidence that the brain has learned.

The reward: reinforcing behaviour

When the anticipated reward finally arrives, the brain compares what happened with what it expected.

If the experience is rewarding, the brain strengthens the connection between the signal and the behaviour that followed.

This process happens constantly throughout everyday life.

When a behaviour repeatedly produces a rewarding outcome, the brain gradually becomes more efficient at recognising opportunities to repeat it. The pathway becomes stronger, the behaviour becomes easier to initiate and less conscious thought is required.

This is how habits develop.

Initially, this process is enormously helpful. It allows us to drive a car without thinking about every movement, brush our teeth automatically or remember how to ride a bicycle years after first learning.

The same learning system, however, can also strengthen behaviours that are not in our long-term interests.

The brain doesn't ask whether something is healthy.

It asks whether something has been rewarding.

Learning: building the habit loop

Every time this cycle repeats, the brain learns a little more.

  1. A cue appears.

  2. The brain anticipates reward.

  3. We perform the behaviour.

  4. The reward arrives.

  5. The brain strengthens the connection.

Eventually, this sequence becomes so familiar that it operates with very little conscious awareness. We often describe this as acting 'on autopilot'.

This is why people sometimes find themselves reaching for their phone without realising it, opening the fridge despite not feeling hungry or pouring a drink simply because it is Friday evening.

The behaviour has become deeply learned.

Importantly, this learning process is not unique to addiction.

It is the same mechanism that allows us to build healthy habits such as exercising regularly, reading every evening or automatically fastening a seatbelt when we get into a car.

The brain is always learning.

The question is simply what it is learning.

Understanding this cycle is incredibly empowering because it reminds us that behaviours are learned rather than fixed. If the brain can learn unhelpful patterns through repetition, it can also learn healthier ones.

This idea sits at the heart of recovery.

The same remarkable brain that learns compulsive behaviours is also capable of learning new behaviours, forming healthier habits and gradually restoring balance.

Before we explore how addiction develops over time, however, we need to understand another crucial principle of the reward system.

The brain is constantly trying to maintain balance, and every pleasurable experience has a biological cost.

The pleasure-pain balance

If dopamine helps explain why we pursue rewards, the next question is equally important:

Why do pleasurable behaviours so often leave us wanting more?

The answer lies in one of the brain's most important survival mechanisms, its constant drive to maintain balance.

Our brains are designed to keep us functioning within a relatively stable internal state. In biology, this process is known as homeostasis. Whether regulating body temperature, blood sugar, hydration or mood, the brain is continually making small adjustments to keep everything in equilibrium.

The reward system is no different.

Every pleasurable experience temporarily shifts this balance. When we experience something rewarding; whether it's eating chocolate, receiving a social media notification, winning a bet or drinking alcohol, the brain experiences a temporary increase in pleasure. However, because the brain dislikes prolonged imbalance, it immediately begins working to restore equilibrium.

This simple principle sits at the heart of modern addiction.

Homeostasis: the brain always seeks balance

Imagine an old-fashioned set of weighing scales.

When both sides are level, the system is balanced.

Now imagine placing a heavy weight on one side. The scales immediately tip. They do not remain tilted forever. Instead, the system naturally tries to restore balance.

Our reward system behaves in much the same way.

Every pleasurable experience causes the scales to tip temporarily towards pleasure. In response, the brain activates processes that push back in the opposite direction. This 'counterbalance' helps return us to our normal baseline.

For occasional rewarding experiences, this is exactly how the system should work:

  1. We enjoy something.

  2. The feeling gradually fades.

  3. Balance returns.

  4. Life continues.

The difficulty begins when highly rewarding experiences occur repeatedly and in quick succession.

If the brain is continually being pushed towards pleasure, it continually pushes back towards the opposite side of the scale.

Over time, this balancing response becomes stronger. What initially produced a large sense of reward begins producing less and less. This is not because the brain is malfunctioning.

It is because the brain is doing precisely what evolution designed it to do, protecting balance.

Tolerance: why more becomes necessary

Almost everyone has experienced tolerance in some form.

Think back to the first cup of coffee you ever drank. For many people, a single cup produces a noticeable effect. Years later, that same person may need two or three cups simply to feel awake.

The same principle applies across many rewarding behaviours.
